Lactation Consultant

 

Supports the mission of People's Community Clinic by providing breastfeeding support and education to PCC patients in a timely, effective, and efficient manner.

 

This role is a temporary grant-funded role through 8/31/25, with the potential for extension beyond the initial grant period. This role is full-time, 40 hours per week; consideration will be given to applicants desiring part-time hours. The full-time biweekly salary for this role is $2,384.62 - $2,769.23, which is equivalent to an annualized range of $62,000 - $72,000, and this role is benefit-eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Lactation programming with Lactation Supervisor and Director of Early Childhood Programs
    • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, work processes, and patient care and work cooperatively to implement those improvements.
    • Attend/participate in relevant meetings and trainings within the department and clinic-wide.
    • Attends formal lactation training, including conferences, workshops, or teleseminars with new/updated information on lactation issues.
    • Mentors peer breastfeeding counselors through formal training, ongoing guidance, and supervision.
  • Perform direct patient education and advocacy
    • Assesses infant’s readiness to breastfeed at infant’s well-child checks (WCC), weight checks, or specific lactation visits.
    • Provide breastfeeding counseling to PCC patients in the clinic and over the phone and provide follow-up support for lactation management issues according to clinic resources.
    • Provide one-on-one and group breastfeeding counseling in the clinic.
    • Prepares/develops educational breastfeeding materials as needed.
  • Coordinate patient care and follow-up
    • Assist the providers with assessments of and referrals for outside services for lactation
    • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to optimize the number of breastfeeding infants.
    • Keep accurate records of patient contacts and report assessment findings to appropriate staff.
    • Educate on breast pump use in adherence to specific pump brand. 
  • Coordinate in-house and outreach opportunities
    • Serve as the liaison to Mom’s Place for additional support and supplies.
    • Facilitate and teach breastfeeding information to PCC staff.
    • Serves as clinic’s liaison on breastfeeding matters. Represents PCC Lactation services to the community.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines.

Qualifications

Education: 

  • B.S. or B.A. or higher degree with graduation from an accredited university.

 

Experience:  Minimum three years related related experience serving diverse patient populations in a community health setting.

 

Certificate/License:  IBCLC Certification Required

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish and familiarity with Hispanic population culture.
  • Understanding of the theory and practice of breastfeeding, following public and community health service practices and generally accepted professional and ethical standards of patient-centered care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and consistently cordial working relationships with physician(s), other employees, and patients;
  • Able to manage time effectively to ensure efficiency and timely follow through on tasks; able to accommodate changes in the workplace (e.g. procedures, scheduling, staffing, etc.); able to work effectively under pressure; maturity, flexibility, stability, initiative;
  • Interest in and commitment to provision of high quality healthcare to vulnerable populations.
