Overview

Health Education

 

We are seeking a Health Education Intern to support the mission of People's Community Clinic by helping improve patient care and education. As an intern, you are expected to help with identifying opportunities to improve workflow, work processes and patient care and to work cooperatively to implement those improvements.

 

OBJECTIVE:

This position works as a member of a care team to coordinate patient care and support patients and families in self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change. Care team members are expected to assess and manage the health needs of the patient population and to communicate effectively with all patients, especially vulnerable populations.

 

This position is available to students who qualify for Work-Study through their university, where we are an approved Work-Study site. 

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Health Education Supervisor, this individual’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Support with teaching Adolescent and Pediatric patients about puberty, healthy relationships, consent, STI prevention, pregnancy prevention methods, and reproductive anatomy
  • Help collect and organize data from PCC Adolescent and Pediatric patients
  • Find new and creative ways to educate patients about their reproductive health
  • Assist in organizing and printing additional health education materials for patients
  • Assist with other tasks/activities needed by the Health Education Department

Qualifications

Education:  Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university, preferably in a related field such as Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Social Work, or a related discipline.

 

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a customer service or administrative role is preferred
  • Has some interpersonal communication experience, preferably with vulnerable populations.
  • Has discussed or taught about women’s health, sexual/reproductive health, or healthy relationships

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knows basics of what to look for in a healthy relationship, what consent is, and what different birth control options are
  • Knows reproductive anatomy and the puberty process
  • Understand STI prevention methods
  • Able to communicate effectively and professionally with patients ages 9-24 and their parents
  • Able to teach in a 1:1 setting as well as a small group setting
